Say Goodbye to Batter Residue: How to Clean a Waffle Maker

Waffles are one of America's favorite sweet treats. They would probably be enjoyed even more often if it weren't such a chore to clean the waffle maker afterward. Especially when dealing with dried-on batter, many waffle lovers are left at a loss and find it incredibly difficult to remove the stubborn residue from their waffle maker. All too often, people reach for the wrong tools and methods, which can easily damage the non-stick coating. Fortunately, there are a few simple tips and tricks to ensure that not only baking and enjoying your waffles is a pleasure, but cleaning up afterward is just as quick and easy.

How do you clean a waffle maker properly?

The right way to clean your waffle maker depends, among other things, on the type of waffle maker you have. With modern waffle makers, the baking plates can often be removed. This makes the cleaning process much easier. But don't worry: if you have an older waffle maker without removable plates, the following tips will still help you to clean it easily and hassle-free.

Preparation

First, the waffle maker should be switched off and unplugged. Then, let the waffle maker cool down first so you do not burn yourself during the cleaning process. It is best to let the waffle maker cool down only until it is still lukewarm. This prevents batter from drying out and becoming difficult to remove. Future cleaning can be made easier if you place a piece of paper towel inside the waffle maker while it is cooling down to absorb any excess grease.

Cleaning

Once the appliance has cooled down sufficiently, you can first remove light residue with a paper towel. Tougher dirt is best removed with a soft plastic brush to avoid damaging the waffle maker's coating. A toothbrush works very well for this step. Brushed-off dirt can then simply be wiped up with a damp cloth. If this does not achieve the desired result, carefully pour a little water onto the baking plates so that the dried-on dirt can soak.

Another cleaning method that yields great results with very little effort is making a so-called cleaning waffle. To do this, simply mix baking powder with a little water until you get a paste that is slightly drier than regular waffle batter. The mixture is then simply baked in the waffle maker just like a waffle, and thanks to the baking powder it contains, it absorbs grease and other impurities. If waffles tend to stick slightly in your waffle maker, it may be helpful to add a little grease to the mixture to prevent it from burning.

After you have cleaned the inside of the waffle maker, you can simply wipe the outside of the waffle maker with a damp cloth or sponge and a little dish soap to clean it from the outside as well.

Don'ts: What to avoid when cleaning

To avoid damaging the non-stick coating of your waffle maker and ruining your next batch of waffles, you should never clean the appliance with hard, sharp, or pointed objects. Abrasive sponges are just as much of a no-go as steel wool or metal utensils, as the coated surface is highly sensitive and easily damaged. You should also avoid harsh cleaning agents, as they may leave behind unwanted residue. In fact, you usually won't even need to use dish soap to get your waffle maker clean if you follow the tips above.

Tips for Preventing Dirt and Grime

If you want to make sure that stubborn, hard-to-remove residue doesn't build up in the first place, it's best to look for a waffle maker purchase with removable baking plates. It is also helpful to grease the waffle maker with plenty of oil or other fat before use to prevent batter from sticking. A special cooking spray is particularly well-suited for this, as it is easy to apply and greases the entire surface of the baking plates.
