What are power tools?

Power tools are hand-held tools that feature an electric motor drive, making work significantly easier. The required electricity can be supplied to the motor in two ways: through a direct connection to the power grid or by using a battery pack.

  • The efficiency determines how much energy consumed by the device is converted into effective power and how much of it is lost, for example, as heat. Generally, the more electronic elements (automatic functions, displays, etc.) built in, the lower the efficiency.

Welding machines – tools for minor repairs

Welding involves working with metallic materials. High temperatures allow these materials to be shaped or joined with other materials. However, welding machines differ:

  • Electrode welding machines produce a rather coarse weld seam. Electrode welders are unsuitable for detailed work and only make sense when welding thick metal sheets.

Pros and cons of cordless and corded tools

Advantages of cordless tools

For certain tasks, such as pruning branches in the garden or drilling in an unfinished attic, a cordless tool is the best solution. They increase freedom of movement and prevent annoying cables from getting in the way.

Disadvantages of cordless tools

However, cordless tools do not only offer advantages. Although these mobile devices are powerful, they are relatively heavy due to the built-in batteries and will sooner or later reach their limits, especially when processing hard materials. For example, when:

  • Milling metal
  • Sawing natural stone

In such cases, using a corded tool is recommended, as it generally offers more power.

Battery Capacity

How long a battery lasts before it is empty is specified in watt-hours (Wh), which in turn is calculated from the voltage in volts (V) multiplied by the capacity in ampere-hours (Ah). Comparing the capacity in watt-hours with the power consumption (in watts) of the device shows how long the device can run until the battery is drained.

Calculation Example

A circular saw has a battery with a voltage of 12 V and a capacity of 2 Ah.

12 V x 2 Ah = 24 Wh

This means that the battery can deliver a power of 24 watts in one hour. If the corresponding circular saw were operated at only 20 watts, it could run continuously for 1.2 hours (1 hour and 12 minutes). If it were operated at 200 watts of power, the electricity would only last for 0.12 hours (just over 7 minutes). When calculating the runtime of a battery, it should always be kept in mind that power tools tend to be used only for very short periods of time.

Tips for choosing the right power tools

With just a few factors in mind, choosing the right tool becomes much easier.

1. Consider the type of work

The choice of the right tool depends directly on the work to be done. For example, if it is a matter of small drilling and screwing tasks, a cordless screwdriver is the right tool. However, if large holes are to be drilled into masonry, a hammer drill should be used – this is typically much more powerful. The same applies to the different types of sanders or saws, such as table saws or jigsaws: depending on the type of work and the nature of the material to be processed, certain tools are better suited than others. Once it is clear which work is to be carried out on which material, the selection of potential power tools is automatically narrowed down.

2. How often will the tools be used

Usage habits are also important for the buying decision: for rather irregular use, less powerful power tools are often the right choice. After all, if you only want to cut wood or plastic baseboards to size during a renovation, you will get sufficient performance for little money with a more affordable tool. DIYers who use their tools very frequently can, in turn, take a look at high-end power tools. In such a case, purchasing a more expensive device can pay off in the long run: cheaper power tools might not have the necessary power or would have to be replaced more often because they have a shorter lifespan.

3. Handling

One of the most important criteria for the buying decision is the handling of the power tools. Therefore, you should consider the dimensions and weight of the device before buying. For example, if drill holes are to be made overhead on a ladder, a lightweight device is an advantage, while a drill press can also be used when working with components that are not permanently mounted – the higher weight is then less relevant. The question of how ergonomic the tool is should also be clarified before buying: power tools that have an ergonomically shaped handle fatigue the hand muscles less, and models that offer space for both hands are easier to control.
