Your first vacation with baby – preparation is everything
The first vacation with a baby is a topic that divides opinion. While some parents want to spare themselves and their baby any hassle, others fulfill their dream of traveling the world during parental leave. Don't let anyone put you under pressure. There are many different ways to design your first vacation together, and with good planning and preparation, almost anything is possible. If you are relaxed and confident, your little one will feel comfortable too, and your first vacation will become an unforgettable experience.
When is the earliest you can travel with a baby?

From a medical perspective, there is no minimum age for when your baby is ready for their first trip. Theoretically (!), it would be possible just a few weeks after birth. However, the reality of life for new parents is usually quite different. In the first few weeks, the time you spend at home with your baby is exciting enough. You are slowly getting to know each other, and with each passing day, you understand your little one's cues and needs better, so that after a while, routine slowly returns – the perfect recipe for new adventures!
If you already have a certain routine in your daily interactions with your baby, it will be easier to react to unfamiliar situations and improvise in an emergency. In addition, it is very helpful for travel planning if your little treasure already has (more or less) set sleeping habits and feeding times that you can take into account during travel or waiting times.
On average, this is the case from about the 3rd month and aligns with the recommendations of midwives and pediatricians. Regardless of this, the most important thing, as always, is how you assess the situation. You will feel when your desire to travel returns and when you feel confident enough for your first vacation with your baby.
First vacation with baby: Where should you go?

Once you feel the urge to travel, the question of a suitable destination arises. Here, you shouldn't just follow your wanderlust, but also keep practicalities in mind. A backpacking trip through South America may be a long-held dream, but it might not be the best destination for a relaxing first trip with a baby.
We recommend starting small. A first day trip by car, a nice hike with your little one in a baby carrier, or a train ride to visit relatives is ideal for finding out how well you manage on the go. This way, you will gradually learn what your baby needs while traveling and in which situations you are most relaxed. You can then take these experiences into account when planning a longer vacation.
The choice of vacation destination also depends, not least, on which mode of transportation you prefer for your journey:
Car
If your little one has no trouble with longer car rides, the car is one of the most relaxing ways to travel for your first family vacation. You can take breaks whenever needed, you remain completely flexible at your destination, and – the biggest plus – there is plenty of storage space for all the baby essentials you want to bring along.
Train
A train ride has the great advantage that you can focus entirely on your sweetheart along the way, and you can both move around during a long journey. Depending on the length of the trip, however, managing your luggage can be tricky, especially if you have to transfer multiple times. Tip: You can use the luggage service of the transit provider to send some of your bags ahead to your destination.
RV / Camper
If you love camping, an RV or travel trailer is also perfect for your first vacation with a baby. In addition to the benefits of a car, you have the option of self-catering and your sleeping arrangements are always with you. This makes it easy to head for more distant destinations and split the journey into several baby-friendly stages.
Air Travel
Flying with a baby is also possible and, above all, budget-friendly, as many airlines let your little one fly free of charge until they turn 2. However, this only applies if they do not require their own seat and sit on your lap during the flight. You should keep this in mind when choosing your destination, because the longer the flight, the more exhausting it will be for you too.
Important:
If you are drawn to far-off destinations, make sure that the local hygienic conditions and healthcare are good and that there is no increased risk due to dangerous infectious diseases. You should also take the climate into account – because major temperature differences or humid tropical air can be hard on your little one.
Which accommodation is best for your first vacation with a baby?
An important aspect of holiday preparation is choosing the right accommodation. Whether you prefer a hotel, a vacation home, or camping is a matter of personal taste, but make sure the accommodation is child-friendly – this way you can avoid stressful situations from the start and enjoy your first trip with your baby.
- In a hotel, you can enjoy full service and truly unwind from daily life. Look for a child-friendly hotel resort or a family room – where baby-friendly amenities will make your daily vacation routine much easier. Additionally, other guests will react with understanding if your little one cries or is going through a temper tantrum.
- In a vacation apartment or a vacation home, you will have plenty of space and privacy. While self-catering takes a bit more effort, it offers the advantage of keeping your usual routine even while on vacation.
- Particularly in Southern and Central Europe, there are now fantastic campsites where families can find everything they need for a relaxing time, from baby-friendly sanitary facilities and playgrounds to paddling pools and childcare.
