The right SUP board
“Especially when you are starting out with SUP, you need a board that gives you one thing above all: stability,” says Valentin. The expert recommends a wider all-round board that is between 10 and 11.5 feet long and has a high volume. “This ensures that you lie securely in the water, even if the conditions get a bit rougher.” You should also look for a non-slip surface – a so-called EVA deck pad. “Most beginner boards have this as standard today. Because when it comes to Stand Up Paddling, your balance is everything. The better your feet grip, the more securely you stand – and the easier it is to get started.”
Important tip from the pro: “Be sure to check the air pressure. A soft board makes learning really difficult.” You should inflate your board to about 15 PSI.

The Right Paddle
To get moving, you will of course also need a paddle, which is an absolute must-have for any beginner's SUP gear. "Adjust the paddle so that it is about 6 to 8 inches above your height," explains the professional SUP surfer. "This is the optimal height for paddling with power, efficiency, and minimal joint strain."

The Safety Leash
“Safety first,” Valentin emphasizes. That’s why a leash is an absolute must – especially on open water. The leash connects your leg to the board. “This way, you always stay connected to your board. Even if you fall into the water.”
5 Tips for SUP Beginners
As a SUP beginner, you need more than just the right equipment. A little basic know-how about proper SUP technique makes it much easier to get on the board and, above all, keep your balance. Keep these beginner tips in mind:

Start on calm waters
For the beginning, the following applies: the calmer the water, the better. Swimming lakes or slow-flowing rivers without waves are ideal. This allows you to get used to the board and your balance without having to deal with wind or waves. "We can easily do without additional water movement," says Valentin. "They make everything unnecessarily difficult, especially when you are still trying to find your balance."

Get onto your board in shallow water
The easiest way to get onto your board: "It is best to get on from a shallow shore," the expert explains. "Place your board in the water so that the fin floats freely and does not touch the bottom. This prevents it from being damaged by stones or similar objects."

Stand up slowly
Balance is key. That's why you should take plenty of time at the beginning to get used to the movement of the water. "Stay on your knees first," says Valentin. "When you are ready and feel safe, bring your hands onto the board. Then slowly stand up with a lunge, one foot at a time."

The Correct Posture on a SUP
With the right SUP technique, it is much easier to keep your balance. "Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width apart, directly over the carrying handle." Valentin demonstrates: "Keep your eyes forward, not down at the board. Keep your knees slightly bent and your shoulders relaxed." This makes it easier to absorb the movement of the water and stand more stably.

Don't put pressure on yourself
As a pro, Valentin knows all too well how important your mental attitude is. “My tip: Don't put pressure on yourself—SUP is not a competition. Take your time to get a feel for your board.” Mental pressure makes everything harder. Instead, the expert emphasizes: “Staying calm is the most important thing.”
